Bridgend Local Health Board Pilot SignTranslate

2009-06-18

Bridgend Local Health Board has launched a pilot in some GP surgeries to provide communication support for Deaf people in Bridgend. The pilot is running for 6 months and is aimed at ensuring that Deaf people who need British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation are able to access an interpreter when they attend a medical appointment.

SignTranslate provide access to regional BSL interpreters through web-cams who translate the conversation between the doctor and the Deaf patient.

The participating surgeries are; Ashfield Surgery, Cwmgarw Medical Practice, Heathbridge House, Llynfi Surgery, Nantymoel Surgery, New Street Surgery, Newcastle Surgery, Oak Tree Surgery, and Porthcawl Group Practice.

Commenting on the pilot, Michelle Fowler, Community Advocacy Officer, Deaf Association Wales said:

"SignTranslate is a good opportunity for Deaf BSL users to access their GP without the delay of waiting for an interpreter to be booked or struggling with pen and paper conversation.

"It is important to note that SignTranslate does not replace the need for an interpreter but it does go a long way toward the doctor and the Deaf patient understanding each other if an in-depth conversation is not needed.

"9 out 19 surgeries in Bridgend have signed up to this pilot but it is hoped that it will soon spread as the need for this service is highlighted by the pilot. This service is a start towards seeing Deaf people experiencing equality."
